Haven't worked on one quite that old that I can recall. On the later models, you remove the top cover, then feel around the vertical shaft gear for a large screw, remove it and rotate an eccentric which moves the vertical shaft gear closer to the worm. You then replace the screw.Possibly yours is similar. Good luck.
