10w20 is made to act as 10 wt when cold and 20 wt when warm. that should make an engine crank better when cold (like 10 weight). after it is warm it acts as a 20 weight oil and would have slightly less pressure than a straight 30 weight depending on the internal clearances of the bearings. that is why you put 50 weight in an old beat up motor, it holds better pressure with the excess clearances. likewise, the straight 30 wt will cause harder cranking than 10W20 when a motor is very cold (below 20 degrees). if you want an opinion, use 10W30 year round.
