I wouldn't go smaller than a Farmall A/Super A.
It has much more ground clearance than a Ford N-series, and outplows my neighbor's N in deeper snow. (Please don't start a bashing contest here - this is just my observation). Engine power is adequate (at 6200' elevation) but more would be nice. 2WD Traction isn't a problem with good tires and/or chains. One problem with lighter/newer tractors is they don't have WEIGHT and weight is very useful in heavy snow to keep the snow from pushing the tractor around. My Super A weighs 3300+. When you say 'haul firewood' it depends on whether you want to tow a small trailer behind the tractor, or put firewood in a front-end loader bucket. My Super A will haul a small trailer easily, but isn't suited for bucket adaptation or use. Nor is an N series, really - newer tractors with power steering (800 series Ford?) are the way to go for that.
