Why a twist in flat belts?

I got into a heated discussion about the main reason most flat belts used on old time tractors had a twist in them when they were driving a threshing machine or hammer mill or something. My reasons are: 1. Primarily to increase pulley contact area for better traction 2. Change the direction of driven pulley rotation 3. Perhaps cut down on slap or galloping Am I correct?
