Doug,
Everything you mentioned should be painted red. If it is black now that means that it has been replaced with new or rebuilt units which came from the IH dealer painted black, but from the factory they were red. Starter, generator, radiator, carburetor, gear shift knob and gas caps are amoung the things most often seen black on older Farmalls because they were replaced and not repainted. DO NOT paint the spark plugs, plug wires and distributor cap or magneto cap. Take out the good spark plugs and put in old plugs for painting. Remove plug wires and dist. cap for painting. Mask off the plastic part of the coil and paint the rest red. Some of the magnetos were painted and some where not. Rebuilt magnetos were not painted but from what I have gathered, most units were painted at the factory. Mask off the glass part of all gauges and gas sediment bowl and paint the rest red. Mask the black rubber part of the steering wheel. Electrical box and switch knobs are red. Lights are red. All wireing is red. Hoses and belts are red. (Paint will come off the belts but they were painted at the factory also. Same with gear shift knob so most people don't bother painting the rubber gear shift knob.) Farmall sign on the grill is silver with a simi gloss black paint between the letters. Take your wheels off the tractor when you paint it and paint the rims separately. They are silver, front and back. The seat is red except for the (vinyl(not original) or canvas cover which was black or silver depending on the year of the tractor. Don't know what I missed but very little of the tractor was mask off and not painted from the factory. (It took to much time!) Go to your or buy a Farmall Letter Series Originality Guide book for placement of the decals. See page 32 for a good picture of the electrical box. Page 44 has a good picture of the distributor and engine on a Super C which is like the B. Good luck and if you have any questions pleas e-mail me. Ken.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
