When you make any major purchase, you are buying the dealer support, parts availability, and the dependability of the item, as much as the equipment itself. No one has ever made ANY piece of equipment that won't ever break down. At some point, you will need help. Where do you turn? Do they have a parts inventory?
Name brands get to that "status" by taking care of business. Small "upstart" companies MIGHT build a good product, but what happens after the purchase?
If you are like me, haying time is usually a race against the clock. Even with a small amount of hay to work, once you start, you have to keep right on going. No time for overhauling equipment, or waiting for the UPS man to show up with that little part that should not have broke.
With all of that said, I would rather spend a few bucks more, and have the re-assurance of being backed up by a dealer/parts network that can save the day, when something does go wrong.
I bought a New Holland 616 disc mower, last fall. I paid more than what some mowers cost. I hear guys talking about how some mowers are better, and some are cheaper, but my NH works good enough for me. I have three dealers with-in a half hour of the farm, and I'm happy with my choise.
That's how it stacks up for me. You might have a different opinion, and that's your right.
To make a long story short, I'd stay away from the "obscure" brands, and go with a "proven winner". JMHO, John
