The knob you're talking about looks like a big cast iron wing nut. It should be turned all the way in or out not left in an in between position. The Oliver/WFE dealer I worked for had Bolens from 1967 till he went out in the early 90's. Any tube frame rear end with a high/low shift will swap into your chassis if needed. Check bearing on main shaft, its a worm gear setup and if the bearings go bad it can allow the shaft to ride up it can skip.
