12 volt convert

I am converting a Ford 800 and JD 620 to 12 volt. (I know, shame-shame)any way, I need help with the wiring. On both tractors I have got the #1 wire jumped to the big post and then going to the amp guage then on to the battery. Then the #2 or "F" goes where? I have tried different places on the switch and still get nothing in the way of a charge. The alts. are good. I have had a few people tell me that I need a small light bulb or some kind of pressure switch in circut to open the alt. Is this true or what am I not doing right. Any help or preferably a drawing PLEASE!
