Actually the "soft seals" theory works to a point, will it stop a leak, usually not unless your very lucky. But I make it a point of adding stop leaks at alternating oil changes (engine and trannys) to prevent seals from getting hard in the first place. I have also been told by mechanics that engine flushes are extremely hard on seals (the solvents dry the seals out) and recomend using a additive with the oil after a flush.
