I know this isn't the first tractor with hydrostatic drive and swathers are a little off your topic but this may be interesting to some. Versatile's first 100 self-propelled swathers in 1953 had hydrostastic drive. They then went to the dual variable belt drive due to some problems with the hydrostatic and the variable belt drive was cheaper to produce. I wouldn't doubt this was possibly the first use of hydrostatic drives on agricultural equipment. I have one of these drives. In 1973 Versatile produced the Model 300 "Hydro-Mech" 142HP 4wd (not the bi-directional). This tractor could be operated in any of three modes- hydrostatic, hydro-mechanical, or mechanical. This is possibly the first use of hydrostatics in large 4WD tractors. I happen to own the proto-type of this tractor built in about 1968 or 1969.
