The price of fuel vs. wages in 1970 vs. 2003 makes a gallon of gasoline a bargain.
There are only so many BTU of energy in a gallon of gasoline. More than half of the energy just goes out the tailpipe of through the radiator as lost heat. That leaves a lighter more aerodynamic vehicle and lower speeds the only place to improve mileage.
All the easy fixes for mileage such as fuel injection, lock-up torque converter, overdrive and a rounded front end have ben used. Any improvements now cost alot for a little gain.
For example a 1975 GMC 4x4 pickup with an automatic and an approx 175 HP 400 cu" engine got maybe 5 miles per gallon. Now our 2003 1500HD 4x4 with a 366 cu" 300 HP engine averages 15mpg .
