I'd take jw57's advice....I'd be just like him if I were in your situation. I would have my wife and kids do some fire arms training, and I'd go thru the whole drill with them---concerning guns and their use and the responsibility of having them.
Main thing I'd say is this...if this guy walks 1/2 a mile thru weeds and timber...then don't just blow it off....this is serious and I wouldn't rest until I'd done all I could.
