I'd say that went past being nosey.
Give him a heads up that you were aware he had been in the barn. Ask if theres anything else he'll be needing. If so tell him you'll put it a side for him or that you'll make a mental note that its his property not yours.
Treat the fella with courtesy and you have reason to expect the same in return.
