Cub Carburetor calibration

I just traded for a 53 Cub, and when I got it, it would only run with the choke almost closed. I took the carb off cleaned it well with laquer thinner and used a wire and air compressor to clean all the holes and passages. Now it will run without the choke on, but it still seems to run a little lean, and I can't get more fuel to it by the mixture adjustment. Can I slightly open one of the holes a little (like on Harley engines) and allow more fuel through. There is a brass plug on the fuel bowl (screws in fron the outside) that has a small orfice in the end of it. would that be the place to open up, or the screw in jet on the inside of the carb?
