Charging circuit?

Can anyone tell me how the battery charging circuit works
on a '54 Ollie S55? This is a gas 12 volt that runs great, but
I've noticed the batteries run dead after a little while.
wonder if it could be the charging circuit, but I don't really
know how that works. I've got the owner's manual, but it
doesn't say anything about it. Any advice? Thanks!
