Are the 2840 / 2940 the type of John Deeres that Deere has built it's reputation with? The 5400 that I have has had several problems that are minor, but all due to poor quality. When I looked at the internal components from another 5400, I noticed that lack of heavy duty parts (stamped instead of cast, etc.)
