Here's the real deal straight from Vermeer

Thank you for you email regarding the above baler.

The twists in the belts are there for 2 reasons
1. Visibility into the baler
2. To get rid of hay trash, if hay trash is an issue.

If visibility or trash is not an issue, the pins can be removed from the belts and the belts layed flat.
