john deere model m 1950

I have a johnny 2 popper that does not run. I have changed all of the following. New spark plugs, gapped correct. new points and condensor corectly gauges and installed. new fuel, sediment bowl, and filter. carbeurator cleaned, float checked, new gaskets. new battery, installed correctly, with a pos ground. I am getting fire to the plugs, but all i get is an occasional backfire. the only thing i have not done is go into the top of the engine, ie checking for bent pushrods, bad valves etc. anyoney with feed back is appreciated.
