OT - Looking for good bird dog, seeking some input

Howdy Y'all!
Now that most of my chores and major construction efforts are done I am finally able to slow down a bit. That said I am wanting to get a good bird dog for hunting quail and dove with me an my sons. I like the looks of a German Shorthair or the Wymeraner (sp?) but have no experience with them. Seeking your comments and any possible leads. As a youngster we had Labs and Blue Heelers. I am cautious about using retrieivers in FL. Most retrievers I have been around are long haired dogs and I am afraid they would get too hot in Aug./Sept. while hunting. Thanks!
