There are 2 things I would check for myself. You mentioned the amp dial was only rated at 20 amps. It may not be of a large enough capacity, if so it will soon bend needle and probably trash meter,it should be charging full tilt for a few minutes to replace the power used to crank, then should taper off to almost 0 amps. A generator will charge full amps and maximum producable voltage also when the fields are grounded. The 3 position light switches vary the amount of resistance to the field circuit to control charging rate. Maybe you should check out put with a d.c. voltmeter also. Too much voltage and amperage will boil the acid out of the battery, or explode it--NASTY,& DANGEROUS-- if the field coil or post/and/or wire leading to regulator is grounded, it will also sling out the solder from the communtator strips and burn up the armature. Maybe check for a pinched ground wire from the voltage regulator to the generator,maybe the wire lead has a raw spot, or pinched under the mounting bracket. Is the regulator the correct match for the application? Was the generator tested for before the regulator was installed/ to make sure you were not throwing a new regulator up for sacrifice to the same problem if there was a problem? Gene Davis
