Gas engines are usually simpler to work on, cheaper to buy parts for, and start easier in cold weather than Diesels. The majority of tractors today that are 20 hp and up are diesel, which should give you some idea of what people in general want. However, some of the older diesels are not as robust as modern ones (thought the same could be said of gas engines), and as noted, they are typically more expensive to repair.
