Wind power might be a practical alternative. You probably get more sunlight when you don't need it and maybe not enough for those long dark evenings, whereas with wind it probably blows more in the winter when you need more power - and it don't stop when it gets dark!
Depends really on what you want, what you want to spend and what the weather is like in your location.
One thing I do know is that the solar arrays and generators are a lot cheaper on your side of the pond.
