Greg, I have a JD 430L&G with a hand controlled hydrostatic transmission and mine does that to some extent. It doesn't really "free wheel" downhill but it will speed up some depending on the steepness and it slows some when you turn uphill. This seems to be the nature of this type of drive. When mowing my yard I pretty much drive with one hand on the hydro lever except when out in open, level spaces. The zero turn mowers are pretty much the same way except you have to use both hands all the time. So, the deal seems to be that while the hydro drives are quite a bit faster, you have to "drive" them all the time. It seemed strange at first, but once I got use to mine I'd have a real hard time going back to a gear drive. They seem to be pretty durable also, I bought mine new in Jan. 1985, it's still trucking and has never been back to the dealer.
