Cole planter plates and JD plates

I own two 12MX planters and believe I can use a JD planter plate with a center adapter (star knocker?)rather than the costly cast iron Powell plates. Anyone know about this?
I came to believe this by looking at the Lincoln Plate info that states one can use a JD plate in an Allis Chalmers or Cole planter by use of a center adapter plate. Looked at the AC site and there is reference to this. Also put a JD plate in a Cole Planter and it sure looks like it would work if you had something to fill in the center.
