can i jump in? wet sand weighs more. the water is not displacing the sand, its filling up the air space between the sand. water will weigh more than air. the only way water will displace sand is with flowing water, which moves the sand forming what engineers (not TV shows) call a quick condition. up to the quick condition, water makes the grains of sand adhear to each other. you can drive on wet sand, you sink in dry sand. dead sand? never heard of that term.
