A fairly loose and basic guide is, if the load is being constantly pulled regardless of whether you are pulling uphill or downhill - as when pulling a tillage implement - you can usually safely leave the drawbar swinging. If the load is likely to be pushing the tractor when going downhill, as when pulling a trailer or an implement not in the ground, leave the drawbar pinned in the middle.

One exception to this guide is when pulling an offset implement such as a header or a baler. Then, it oftens pays to have the drawbar pinned away over to the side away from the offset to get the implement more completely behind the tractor and possibly reduce the overall width that you have to get through something like a gate.
