I've got several wooden ladders, some are 30 years old. The key to staying healthy is to keep them in good condition. Wobbly ladders are caused by the wood drying out, that's why the steel brace screws have nuts on them(except for the cheapies) so you may retighten them. Painting wooden ladders is a bad idea, just like storing them outside. I use polyuthane clear finish when I get one home from the store so any cracks or splits are visible if they occur. The bottom line is--You really do get what you pay for!BTW- the only ladder I have ever had fail while using was an aluminum ladder. I caught myself by hooking my right arm over a ledge, and dislocated my shoulder; them sprained both ankles when I landed with my right arm flopping around uslessly. No more alunimum ladders for me! When wood ladders are discontinued I,ll buy a commerical quality fiberglass ladder.
