The need and want of a diesel are two different things, I agree. But a diesel is not gonna cost you more in repairs. Say the piston blows a hole in it. Gas of diesel you have to tear her down and rebuild it. It might cost a wee bit more since the parts are larger in a diesel but since they are larger they last longer, way way longer under way more stress. Now, someone with 5 acres to mow could do with a gas but I'd still opt for the diesel, they pretty much run or they don't. No carbs to adjust, or plugs to change, and so on and so forth. Simply put, they aren't any more expensive to own than a gas.
