Yes I have used ATF in alot of differentials to flush out and then refilled with gear lube or tractor fluid. In the days before hydraulic lifters we used to idle the engines on a mix of clean motor oil and Diesel fuel to flush the crankase. Im sure ATF would work for this but dont load the engine or rev it much as the lack of viscosity might allow contact. Just get it good and warm, then change oil & filter again
