We've had a 2630 for about 20 years and will probably have it for 20 more. These tractors are small enough to use for everyday jobs and have enough muscle for bigger jobs. I can't remember the JD engine number, but I know JD used that engine for several years in other tractors and even dozers and backhoes. We have a 1985 550B dozer that has the same engine with a turbo on it. These engines are very fuel efficient, but put out a lot of torgue in a small package. These tractors were Cadillacs in their day. The seat is comfortable and every lever and control is within hands reach, no stretching needed. You can turn the steering wheel with your pinky. All these things make a difference if you drive a tractor all day long. The hydraulic remote has a float function which allows cylinders to move as they please, which is great on implements like our pull type corn planter or 2 row tobacco setter which need to follow the contour of the land. As far as problems, as with all sleeved engines you need to change the antifreeze regularly and keep additive in it to keep the sleeves from pitting. The water pump bearings are a little undersized, so you have to watch for them to get loose. JD sells rebuild kits for them, no need to buy a new waterpump. Finally, the Delco starters weren't big enough because these engines are hard to turn over and the starter sits very close to the engine and picks up a lot of heat. JD now sells gear reduction starters which actually cost a little less than the Delco and last 10 times longer. We love our 2630. It's done a lot of work on our farm and made us a lot of money.
