Battery ignition and magneto BOTH produce the spark when the points OPEN. In the magneto there is no current flow when the points are open. No current flow means no magnetic field to collapse. Points close then current flows creating magnetic field. Points open stopping current flow and collapsing magnetic field induces voltage in secondary winding to sparkplug.
Better go look at that basic electricity section of your book again. Many older small engine books describe magneto and battery operation and theory. Try your local public library.
