Not quite the same. In a mag,the magnets create the magnetic field and CLOSING the points shorts the primary winding which colapses the field inducing voltage in the secondary winding

In a battery ignition,battery voltage flows through the primary winding creating the magnetic field. When the points OPEN the primary current stops and the field colapses,inducing voltage in the secondary winding.
