If the origional 6V system won't start the tractor/equipment then there is an electrical, ignition, carburation or engine problem. A 12V conversion can be a fast easy way to compensate for quite a while. On occassion for a working tractor a PROPERLY DONE 12V or alternator conversion maybe needed. Sad to say many conversions are done with little knowledge, care or proper tools/equipment. The endless stream of questions, burned parts and hours of frustartion are common. Nothing as tacky as a proud owner at a show claiming a 100% Expo restoration with alternators and four external ignition coils on starting engines.
