In many cases, it is cheaper to solve the problems causing the hard starting than it is to convert to 12V. For example, converting to 12V will give you a system that is less sensitive to poor connections than is 6V, but fixing the poor connections is cheaper than converting.

(And I speak as one who has converted to 12V without a kit and without any problems. In my case, the tractor needed a new battery AND a new generator so converting didn't cost any more. I also wanted to use a 12V sprayer that I already had.)
