Dave, you failed to say what model you are talking about. Since the 30 is the most common and I'm in the middle of a complete rebuild, I'll give you the details on it. The nut you speak of does not have to be removed to pull the axle and housing. That's the good news. The bad news is the same nut is on the other end of the axle and it must be removed along with the bull gear from the rearend. This means the LPTO and casing must be removed. The job is pretty straight forward, but it is a much bigger job then you may have planned for. Good luck.
