I think there has been much confusion about Live PTO, independent PTO talk on here. The old tractors had transmission driven PTO's and as RAW said if a rotating machine is truning fast it will push the tractor and that is not good. Having said that tractor manufactures came out with something better. Some use two stage clutchs some use a clutch on the PTO shaft in either case for this to work the PTO shaft must go through the transmission. Maney of the old Olivers and a shaft that went from the clutch on the PTO at the back of the tractor to the flywheel. Don't make any different what you call it they all do the same job, you need one that does not stop when you stop the tractor transmission.
