Hi, Seals fitted or not, there is a seal on diesels. If its not a fitted one then its the guide and valve stem themselves which make the seal (against gravity for an overhead valve engine). So maybe your guides are worn allowing a little oil to seep past. Although your mechanic friend is right about vacuum, the cause is the the differential pressure accross the valve stem - you may have slight positive crankcase pressure until the engine warms up and that would help oil bypass the valve stems. Btw there are an awful lot of old gas engines out there without valve stem seals as well, the valve stem seal being a relatively new invention. I use the word 'relatively' even though stem seals have been around for a long time! Regards, RAB
