I have a 1976 F-150, which Ford also made the F-100 models until 77 or 78. Ford added an extra spring to the leaf spring pack to increase the GVWR to get around EPA fuel mileage guidelines. It gave them a couple more years to get the engines emission friendly due to the higher payload. The F-100 had to meet the guidelines, but none of the 50-series had to because of the GVWR. That's also why big rigs can get by with 3 or 4 MPG without any penalties...
