Compact tractor prices are fairly high due to popularity and demand. I bought a 1984 JD950, 4wd, FEL, PS, 2000 hours, 3 years ago for $8600. It has 27 PTO hp and easily runs a 6' rotary cutter. I am very happy with it. As far as hydro drive, if you will be doing a lot of dirt work or mowing around tight areas, hydro would be a nice extra but not essential. My gear drive works fine for me.
