Maybe it's a UK manual.
In the UK we always refer to 'running in' an engine , not 'breaking in'.
Generally used for first couple of thousand miles in a new car but also used with other types of machine.
We would never refer to it as 'breaking in' as in the second half of last century, as too many UK cars were so unreliable that any reference to breaking would conjure up visions of 'breaking down' and would probably have accelerated the Japanese entry into the market sector!!!!!
