oh no another multigrade oil topic!

the reluctance, confusion, emotion, etc. involved with engine oil selection is amazing. you'd think lube would be simple. everything else is... anyway i heard something from my uncle that would contribute to the reluctance and fear to use multigrade: sometime around the early to mid 80s neighbors who bought new JD with factory fill 15w-40 (or maybe 10w-30?) were losing their engines in relatively short time. repeatedly! when it occurs that frequently with the locals it makes people second guess a make and the related products involved. unfortunately i dont know any more details. is anyone aware of this problem, its cause, and JD's solution ? this is central MN so tropical heat wasn't the cause. no one who bought a new ford or ih during that time had any problems (at least that the neighbors knew of). piecing together history -karl
