Restoration or to "make new" is a definitely money losing business. I do well "returning to service" tractors and equipment. Key is to find items that have a high value to farmers or "weekend warriors" in your area. Buy them "right"; best if they need cosmetic work which hurts value but not a lot of mechanical work. I have been doing this for the better part of 15 years. Try to use them for a year after I fix them up, then turn a profit. Got started farming this way. Best deal I ever did was to make $1500 profit on a Long 560, and get a years use. Worst was a 1410 Case David Brown, spent $5000 in it, and just worth $5000, stuck using that one a while. I used to try to do 4 units a year. Now, not worth the risk, but it enabled me to build up my equipment to where I have pretty good stuff to farm with bought with the profits off what started as that 560 Long, and a hayrake in a bucket (literally, for $15).
