Another possibility is that it's stolen. I seem to recall that Cat keeps a list of all known stolen Cat equipment (which would explain why they won't sell you a part without the machine's serial number). You could grab the model and serial numbers and check with the closest Caterpillar dealer, they might be able to identify the owner.
