More to the point of your question, If your are using a pto driven implement you need to run the engine so as to produce the correct pto speed,(540 or 1000 rpm.)and choose a gear that will give you a reasonable ground speed. On other applications a higher gear and moderate (without "lugging") engine speed will produce greatest fuel economy without excessive engine wear. Appropriate ground speed should always be a safety consideration.
