Using distilled water and a meter will give you a fairly accurate analysis of the pH of the soil water solution. For alfalfa, as long as the soil water pH is abouve about 6.2-6.5 water pH would be sufficient. With greater levels of soil acidity it is much more important to have buffer pH also (amount of acidity stored on the surface of the soil particles). Deionized water will not give an accurate buffer pH. Don't gamble the $20.00 (private lab) or less ($4.00 in one county here, free in another against losing an alfalfa seeding with good seed costing $50.00 per acre or more.
