The one major thing you have not considered is the bearing load area. Remember if all things are designed adequately and work as that design your discussion is irrelevant. The bearings should never touch the crankshaft!!!! Unfortunately, we stop and start the engines, degrade the oil with heat, chemicals of combustion and mechanical shear forces. Try running a LPG engine at constant continuous speed, say on a generator set, at constant load (well within design) using a good synthetic,a very generous oil capacity, bypass micro filter, along with regular oil analysis and see how long it would run between oil changes!!!! Unfortunately the modern automotive engine, or tractor engine for that matter, is designed to have a very finite lifetime. Running costs including cost of manufacture have, supposedly, already been optimised by some computer somewhere. This is why some of the old tractors are still going. They were designed with low brake horse power per litre, slow max revs and with enough metal to resist 50 years corrosion and still run OK. Of course in their day they were at the cutting edge of technology and many fell by the wayside when they got it wrong! Just a few things for your next discussion with your friend! Regards, RAB
