Hi Howard,
Don't know but may be there is a locking tab washer fitted which needs bending back before undoing? The machine make and model would help to get replies.
If he can see the threads, he should be able to determine which way to undo it. Maybe following the threads round with a piece of stiff wire would show the direction.
Best of luck or ring a local sevice engineer or the parts stockist might help if they have one in stock to look at.
