ford 9n backfire

Okay, I finally get the heap running and running fairly well...not perfect(it misses once in a while...not regularly, and decide to try to mow with it. I have a six foot Woods finishing mower to pull behind it. I mowed for maybe 15 minutes, and it backfires and dies. I can get it to fire now, it sputters away for about five minutes and dies. What gives? did I put too much of a load on her or could it be something else. I parked it and bought a tractor that runs, but I would still like to get it in good working order. Any ideas where to start?
