There is a product out there(Wallyworld perhaps) called Simple Green. Biodegradable and environmentally friendly and works pretty good. Warm up the engine and pray on the simple green, let cool and spray again. let it sit till the engine is good and cold, then pressure wash. Hot engines and cold water are NOT a good mix. Then if needed, repeat. It will work pretty good, not as good as a steam cleaner, but you'll be surprised how good you can get it.
