INSTALLING TEMP GAGE PROBE INTO ENGINE HEAD

I PURCHASED AN NAA TRACTOR. IT HAD A PIPE PLUG IN THE ENGINE HEAD WHERE THE TEMP GAGE PROBE GOES. THE TEMP GAGE WAS ON THE TRACTOR BUT THE PROBE WAS JUST HANGING ON THE SIDE OF THE TRACTOR. I PURCHASED A NEW TEMP GAGE & INSTALLED IT ON THE TRACTOR. HOWEVER, WHEN I REMOVED THE PIPE PLUG & INSTALLED THE PROBE, I COULD SIDE THE PROBE WIRE IN & OUT. IS THERE SOMETHING IN THE ENGINE HEAD THAT SEALS THE PROBE & PREVENTS IT FROM SLIDING IN & OUT. I HAD TO REMOVE THE PROBE & RE-INSTALL THE PIPE PLUG TO USE THE TRACTOR. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
